Annual Swimarathon - 28th February 2015

The Global 2015 Swimarathon was held on the 21st and 22nd of February with the local Stornoway event taking place on the 28th February. The Stornoway Rotary Club hostied the event at the Lewis Sports Centre and invited local teams and clubs to participate to help raise funds for the Eradicate Polio charity.

Monies raised locally are match funded by the regional rotary funds and then matched 5-fold by the Gates Foundation. A small contribution locally will make a big contribution where it is needed to help Eradicate Polio.

Stornoway Rotarians and the Nicolson Institute Interact Club Members partnered with community members to swim 1000 lengths as part of their annual global “End Polio Now” campaign.

Rotary have been supporting the fight against Polio since 1985, when the PolioPlus Program was launched. This was the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort.
